A Mother’s Journey to Creating Comfortable Clothing for Sensory-Sensitive Children

Hi! I’m Camille, founder of WE LUV U JOSEPH™, a family-owned clothing brand dedicated to creating sensory-friendly sleepwear and loungewear made with natural fabrics for children. While our products are designed for all kids, they were especially inspired by children with high sensory sensitivities, including those on the autism spectrum.

This brand wasn’t born from a business idea it was born from my experience as a mom.

Our Story Began with Joseph

My seven-year-old son, Joseph, is autistic and has sensory sensitivities, especially when it comes to clothing.

Every time I ordered clothes online, I hoped he would love them. But more often than not, he would only wear three out of every ten pieces I bought.

The interesting part?

He never chose clothing because of how it looked. He chose it because of how it felt.

As someone who loves fashion, that surprised me at first. But eventually, I realized comfort mattered more than appearance for him.

Joseph naturally gravitated toward clothing that felt:

• Soft
• Smooth
• Flowy
• Gentle
• Cozy against his skin

The clothes he rejected often had rough seams, stiff fabrics, or textures that overwhelmed his senses.

Many mornings before school became stressful because I wasn’t sure whether he would tolerate the outfit I had picked. Something as simple as an uncomfortable shirt could affect his entire day.

As parents, we know that when our children start the morning feeling comfortable, everything else becomes a little easier.

Learning Through Experience

Instead of letting perfectly good clothing go to waste, I donated Joseph’s unworn clothes to families here in the United States and shipped boxes to relatives in the Philippines.

After countless trial-and-error purchases, my husband and I changed our approach.

Instead of shopping online, we started taking Joseph to physical stores where he could touch the fabrics himself.

By then, Joseph had become pre-verbal and could answer simple questions.

We would hand him a shirt and ask:

“Yes or no?”

If he smiled and said “Yes,” it went into the cart.

If he said “No,” it went back on the shelf.

That simple process changed everything.

The Discovery That Changed My Perspective

In May 2024, while organizing Joseph’s closet before the new school year, I began checking every garment label.

I separated the clothes he loved from the ones he refused to wear.

A pattern quickly appeared.

Almost every favorite piece contained a high percentage of natural fibers.

One of his favorite shirts was a 100% cotton Henley from H&M.

Many of his favorite pajamas contained cotton or bamboo blends.

There was one exception a very soft fleece pajama made from polyester but nearly every other favorite item contained at least 40–50% natural fibers.

That moment completely changed how I thought about children’s clothing.

Every Child Is Different

When people hear that Joseph has autism, they sometimes assume life is extremely difficult.

The truth is more nuanced.

Like many autistic children, Joseph has incredible strengths.

He’s independent in many ways, curious, loving, and continues to surprise us every day.

Some areas are more challenging, especially following multi-step directions and staying on task.

Watching his progress from being non-verbal to becoming pre-verbal and discovering more words every day has been one of the greatest blessings of our lives.

Every child on the autism spectrum is unique.

Every family’s journey is different.

Why I Started WE LUV U JOSEPH™

As I reflected on our family’s experiences, I kept asking myself one question:

“If finding comfortable clothing is challenging for us, how much harder must it be for families whose children need even more sensory support?”

That question became the foundation of WE LUV U JOSEPH™.

Our mission is simple:

To create thoughtfully designed sleepwear and loungewear that is:

• Soft and gentle
• Made with natural fibers whenever possible
• Comfortable for sensory sensitivity
• Stylish enough for every child
• Created with families in mind

Because every child deserves clothing that feels safe and comfortable.

Our Journey Didn’t Start Here

Before starting WE LUV U JOSEPH™, I had already been building another business.

In October 2019, I launched my online resale business, selling quality overstock clothing, shoes, handbags, and accessories through eBay and Poshmark.

Today, I continue managing both businesses while building this brand from the ground up.

Looking back, it’s amazing how far life has taken me.

I immigrated to the United States in 2018 on a K-1 fiancé visa, married my husband, and built our life together in a peaceful small town in Kentucky.

The kindness of our community has been a blessing, and I’m grateful every day to call it home.

It’s our family’s story.
